Earlier in the year I decided that I wanted to try digital sketching so I bought an iPad. I had been debating for sometime on whether to go digital or not, there is just something I love about putting a pencil to paper, so I wasn’t sure, but I mainly want use it for urban sketching.
There are a number of advantages to using the iPad though. I can do a number of different sketches without taking up more space or going through sketchbooks. I can also take a sketch I started, duplicate it and change it without impacting the original.
I also like the fact that I can not only sketch, but I can easily add color. If I want to add color to a sketch, but not have it change the sketch itself, I can add the color as a different layer and keep both versions without having to redraw it. Another thing I like is the fact that I can take just my iPad and Apple pencil, they work as not only my sketchbook, but also paints without taking up more room.
I choose two different drawing apps, both where under $10, so I didn’t feel too bad about getting both. Each has different features, but that does mean I have to learn two different workflows. I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of my traditional sketchbook, but I do like having the option to do things digitally!
